Get Involved

We're extremely keen to hear from local groups, individuals, families and businesses who are interested in getting involved.

The project has always been led by the local communty and we would love to hear from you if you think you could contribute in any way. We work with partners across the community and city to host events and activities for families and local residents, as well as to promote Hylton Castle and Sunderland to a wider regional audience. We run regular litter picking sessions in Hylton Dene, details of which can be found on our events page. So, if you have an idea for an event or activity at either the Castle or Dene, please let us know!

We also have a growing band of volunteers involved in research, events, recording oral histories, delivering school workshops, administration and much more. Whether you have skills and experience to share with us, or if you'd like to build up skills and experience of your own, we welcome everyone to become part of the project.

If you would like to contribute a lot of time, or a little time, we always have the kettle on for an informal chat about getting involved!

All of these stories are from our amazing volunteers that took part prior to the completion of the renovation project. We will be featuring many others in the weeks and months to come now that we have finally opened our doors to the public!

But don't just take it from us that volunteering is brilliant! Instead, here are some of our amazing volunteers to tell you why they lend a hand!

"My name is Colin. I enjoy my experiences as a volunteer; carrying out site tours around the castle and talking to visitors about the development happening with the castle as well as hearing how happy they are that all this is all happening. I also enjoyed volunteering for the Battle for Sunderland and Medieval Mayhem Day, where I was helping young children make keyrings and book markers - great fun!"

"My name is Sue and I am a volunteer for the Hylton castle project. I often help out at events with my little dog Bluebelle, it gives so much pleasure to visitors and the local community! I really enjoy my role as a volunteer; meeting people, taking part in the guided walks and interacting with the public on event days. My main vocation is helping children, and at events I often help them make a Hylton Castle badge! I'm very much looking forward to the completion of the castle so that I may continue my involvement as a volunteer with tea room duties!"
