Hylton Castle Project recently brought together local schools with the incredibly talented Imagine Creative Solutions to produce creative, colourful banners as part of the Heritage Schools programme. The schools involved were Northern Saints Primary, Hylton Castle Primary, Castletown Primary, St John Bosco Primary, English Martyrs Primary and the Hylton Castle Mission Youth Group.
Heritage Schools is a programme devised by Historic England aimed at encouraging children to explore their local history and heritage, making sure:
- Children develop a sense of pride in where they live
- Children understand their local heritage and how it relates to the national story
- Local historic context is embedded in the school's curriculum
- Heritage providers are more connected to the needs of local schools
- Communities are more deeply involved in the life of the school
The children were inspired by this programme to create artwork based upon Hylton Castle; its stories, myths and history. Imagine Creative Solutions, who are a Sunderland based company, then took these conceptual drawings and produced a series of wonderful banners with coherent and colourful designs. The banners were then used to decorate Hylton Castle’s Play Area for the recent Medieval Mayhem Day.
Unfortunately, before the event, some of the banners were vandalised. In a further act of kindness, Imagine Creative Solutions have offered to reprint the damaged banners so all schools will have a constant reminder of a wonderful day.
This project has been one which has encouraged imagination, creativity and harnessed the collaborative spirit of all involved. We hope you enjoy the pictures below. The banners are now in storage and will be used as decoration at future events.
